Is Your Roof Winterized?
from:Whether you own a home or a business, it is important to make sure that your roof is ready for winter before winter is upon you. Planning ahead can prevent you from getting caught unaware, save time, and save precious pennies that can really pile up if your roof becomes damaged due to lack of preparation or, in this case, winterization.
Depending on your geographic location winter may either be a time of significant rainfall or the time of year when your roof will be exposed to snow, ice, and extreme cold temperatures. This can take a tool on your roof that is left unprotected and the price on that toll can add up quickly .
Some things you can do to help winterize your roof include keeping the gutters cleaned out and in good repair. Clogged gutters, when filled with leaves and debris, combined with rain that becomes ice, can cause a great deal of damage to your roof or be ripped off the roof altogether.
If there are any leaks on your roof you want to make sure that they are repaired well before the rainy winter season hits as you may not have any good opportunities to do that for quite a while. More importantly though because it can prevent further damage from occurring. When left alone, small leaks can become huge damage to not only the roofing structure but also the home below that the roof is designed to protect. Some of the damage that it can do is water damage. But that is honestly the least of your worries. Mold, bacteria, and mildew can build up in the unseen areas where water is collecting. This can be inside your walls or in the ceiling of your home. This can lead to all kinds of health problems for your family if at home and your customers and staff if your business roof has sprung a leak.
Also consider waterproofing your roof to prepare for the season when you will receive a great deal or rain, ice, and snow. Waterproofing does more than help protect your roof from water but it's an excellent start when preparing your roof for winter. Waterproofing should be handled by professionals but generally pays for itself in savings to your utility bills during the winter and summer months to follow. Sitting water, melting ice and snow, and constant exposure to cold can lead to a wide range of problems for your roof. Waterproofing is your first line of defense against many of those problems.
The time to ask if your roof is ready for winter is long before winter hits. Take the time today to see what can be done to give your roof an edge over Old Man Winter this year.
